Amy returns to Sustainability Test Kitchen to show off some of the homemade beauty products we’re dedicated to using. Remember, doing it yourself is a surefire way to ensure to reduce packaging and use raw ingredients that you’ve selected for their sustainability. Amy shows how she makes body scrub from old coffee grounds, facial scrub from cornmeal and orange juice, and a mask from banana and honey.

We’re always looking for more green recipes, whether they be for food, beauty supplies, or virtually anything else. If you have a good recipe you use, don’t forget to email us. We love to learn and share your tricks and hints with others!

Cool ideas and stuff.. may have to try some out on the road.

Have you ever tried henna for hair coloring? I’ve found it to be great for my hair, no harmful chemicals being used, less packaging and beautiful colors. I think some of them would look fabulous on you!

    Hi Cherie,

I haven’t tried henna yet. I have only heard good things about it, though. I do think it’s worth looking into. I’m sure it’s more cost effective, too.

I love these recipes!! I am trying the coffee one today. Are you planning to make another beauty-at-home dedicated program soon? It will be great. I love your show, guys. I found it recently.

    Cheers from Winnipeg, Canada

    Heydi,

We’re looking to get back into the kitchen in a couple of episodes, to be sure. We realize some people like the little home improvement stuff, some like the kitchen, etc. So, keep an eye out.

Also, if you have any great little natural products you use for keeping your skin its best in those Winnipeg winters, we’d love to know!

I used henna on my sister’s hair a couple of weeks ago, and it turned out beautifully. I’m going to be using the indigo/henna mix for my own dark hair over the holiday break from work and can’t wait. My sister’s hair resembled that of a pre-homo sapien actor on a TLC or Discovery program just after I managed to get her hair thoroughly coated, but there were no fumes during the process and she just wrapped her head in an old towel for an hour or so and hung out.

Much cheaper, better smelling, and obviously safer for the environment than commercial hair dyes. Definitely recommended!
