Hey! It's Rev. Chumley! For those unfamiliar, he runs The Cult of UHF (http://www.cultofuhf.com) and was one of our fellow panelists at the video podcasting panel at Dragon*Con.

Yeah...sorry to hear about your concrud. We saw your most recent post where you were too under-the-weather to talk. We're mostly better, though I'm at a point now where I have one inflamed tonsil that alternates daily. Left, right, left, right....grrr.

If you two ever need anything just drop me a line!

If you're giving out a fake address, aren't the companies then just mailing to the fake address? If so, this wouldn't be saving anything, just saving out from getting the junk. Just stick to your guns. I always just say, "I don't give out my personal information." Works every time AND no chance of them mailing anything.

Also, when I do order something from a company that I know will mail me something, I request in advance to have them mark me, "Do not mail/rent." I do this with charitable organizations too, because while I love to give to them, I hate to receive their crap!!! :)

Carreen,

You're right, and sticking to your guns is best. We've been in one or two situations in the last few years where we've not wanted to make a scene, but by and large, that's what we do, too.

But, at the same time, it doesn't generate the same amount of junk mail. Often, if the ZIP mismatches with the city and state, then the address is discarded on account of clerical error, or the first mailing is "returned to sender" and results in the address being scrubbed from the list. One piece of junk is created, then, rather than a half dozen that you throw out over a process of months or years.

Sometimes, even that is not enough. For a very long time, AOL would send us CDs that came in *aluminum containers* in the mail. It didn't stop, even after repeated calls to AOL, until I filed their mail as "pornographic material" with the postmaster. Then it finally stopped.

But yes, sticking to your guns is best. Sometimes we cave and keep up appearances, though.

dear rhett and amy,
i discovered greentime via no impact man. i really enjoy your site, your videos and your commitment to action. i used the no impact man details to try to stop our junk mail early this year. unfortunately a few catalogs are still sneaking in. your post here got me rolling again. every time i haul in another catalog i head straight to the phone to get my name OFF the list. i'm hoping i'll soon get to the end of this. thanks for your inspiration to stay on the greener track!
